Indian citizens must register with the Hong Kong PAR system if they wish to visit Hong Kong. Once approved, the Hong Kong PAR is valid for a stay of up to 14 days. Having a valid PAR for Hong Kong is also necessary for Indian citizens who will be in Hong Kong in transit.
Hong Kong witnessed a steady drop in tourism from India prior to the implementation of the Hong Kong PAR. In 2016, 480. 000 Indians travelled to Hong Kong, a decline of 9% in comparison to the previous year. The online visa for Hong Kong should facilitate travel from India to Hong Kong.
Hong Kong Tourism Board Regional Director Peter Hoslin said in an interview that they are expecting to witness growth in Indians travelling to Hong Kong in a couple of years. Currently, there are 38 direct flights a week from India to Hong Kong.
Peter Hoslin also said that “we are working closely with our trade partners in India to turn this around. We are focusing on young dynamic travellers between 20-40 years, families and repeat travellers.” The tourism board is targetting three main cities in India: Mumbai, New Delhi and Bengaluru. The hope is that travel from India to Hong Kong will increase in the coming years.
